Today, there are more than 200,000 surgeries in queue in Ontario alone, with some people having
to wait more than 30 weeks for their procedure.
With patients facing such a dire situation, LHSC sought to design a high-efficiency surgical centre—one that's
publicly funded and can do the procedures faster and more efficiently.

The Nazem Kadri Surgical Centre

The Nazem Kadri Surgical Centre (NKSC) at LHSC is the first of its kind Canada. As a high-efficiency ambulatory surgical centre, it is designed to expand capacity, cut wait times and reduce surgical costs while improving the patient experience.

Having first opened its doors in 2020, in the face of a global pandemic, the NKSC has already served more than 8,000 patients. Furthermore, the impact of this innovative facility is being felt not only at an organizational level, but more importantly, by the patients it serves.

80% reduction in surgical instruments required
18% fewer patients waiting for non-cancer surgeries

This led the Government of Ontario to announce its support for the centre by providing a portion of the funding required to expand the NKSC. But to bring the full project to life, including four new operating rooms, an expanded medical device reprocessing department and more space for patient preparation and recovery, additional support from our community is essential.
