Hope through innovation

Groundbreaking Techniques | Using a groundbreaking technique called normothermic regional perfusion (NRP), the team at the Multi Organ Transplant Program has become the first in Canada to restore blood flow to organs after death, reviving and preserving them before transplant. Organs once considered unusable now function again, surgeries are smoother and recovery times have dropped from months to days. This innovation is giving more patients their second chance at life and has the potential to save countless more as the technique spreads across Canada.

A legacy of discovery

The Matthew Mailing Centre for Translational Transplant Studies stands as a powerful example of how generosity can change the future of care. Established through a transformational gift from Matthew Mailing, the Centre was built entirely through donor support to advance research that improves transplant outcomes.

Located beside the Multi-Organ Transplant Unit at LHSC, the 9,000-square-foot facility bridges the gap between laboratory science and patient care. Its open, collaborative design brings together scientists and clinicians to turn discovery into treatment faster, helping more patients receive transplants that last longer and work better.

Here, researchers are tackling some of transplantation’s biggest challenges—from preventing organ injury to developing new therapies that help transplants last longer—advancing breakthroughs that are reshaping care in Canada and beyond.

Supporting life beyond surgery

For patients undergoing transplantation, the journey to renewed health can be long and uncertain. Many face weeks or months away from home, time off work, as well as unexpected expenses for travel, accommodations and medications. These challenges can add immense financial and emotional strain at an already difficult time.

The Patient Assistance Program helps ease that burden. By providing essential financial support, it ensures that no patient or family has to choose between healing and hardship.
