Perfusionist Fellowship Program

Perfusionists are the unseen force behind every successful open-heart surgery. These experts operate the heart-lung machine, keeping patients alive while their heart is stopped. Their precision allows surgeons to perform the most complex procedures in a motionless, bloodless field, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients.

Through the Perfusionist Fellowship Program, emerging specialists train alongside LHSC’s world-class cardiac team, gaining hands-on experience in operating the heart-lung machine, managing ventricular assist devices and supporting patients on ECMO—an advanced system that temporarily takes over the work of the heart and lungs during critical illness. Donor investment in this program helps cultivate the next generation of experts who keep hearts beating during life-saving surgeries.
